EVENT: Midland Educators Leadership with Step Up and Teach First

This weekend, full of education events and conferences, we thought we'd highlight the work of Ben Hobbis and Step Up.

This award-winning CIC brought together teachers and leaders from around the Midlands to hear from Miriam Hussain, Stacey Jordan, Tiyana Thompson, Adrian McLean and our own Chris Passey who each spoke about their individual approaches to reducing inequity in their settings. Step Up are doing some really great work and you should definitely check them out.

NEWS: Prime Minister Unveils Major Post-16 Education Reforms and Skills Target

ree

The Prime Minister announced a significant package of reforms for the further and higher education sector.

Central to the plan is a new target for two-thirds of young people (66%) to be participating in higher-level learning (academic, technical, or apprenticeships) by age 25, up from the current 50%. The reforms also include the creation of new Technical Excellence Colleges and a single funding model for Level 4-6 courses.

COVID: Covid Inquiry Hears School Closures Damaged 'Very Fabric of Childhood'

The UK Covid-19 Inquiry began its module on the impact of the pandemic on children and young people.

The inquiry heard evidence that the decisions to close schools had devastating, long-lasting ramifications and that the Department for Education (DfE) had undertaken zero contingency planning for school closures before the first lockdown in March 2020.

PODCAST: Mind the Gap with Prof. Daniel Willingham

ree

We love Mind the Gap with Tom Sherrington and Emma Turner but this episode was very special. 'Memory is the residue of thought' is one of the most powerful quotes in education and reminds us that our students have to think deeply about something for it to be even remotely likely they'll remember it. This brilliant episode brings you back to contemplating your own classroom with the uncomfortable truth that your students are likely not paying attention to the things you want them to and what to do about it. A great episode from an epic podcast.

BLOG: School Improvement Starts Here: Behaviour, Attention, Participation, and Memory

Adam Boxer has started blogging again - thankfully! - and for his first foray into Substack, he talks about school improvement through three questions:

  • Is there disruption-free learning in almost every lesson across the school?

  • Is every student paying attention and participating in every lesson?

  • Does this school have a long term memory strategy?

Boxer argues that contexts matter but there are enough similarities in schools for school improvement plans to 'transcend' these. What do you think? Do you agree?

That's it for your Sunday EduPulse Round Up; have an amazing week and remember to look after yourselves!
